DESCRIPTION:
This assignment is an introduction to motion design and After Effects techniques. It includes readings, discussions, technical exercises and short motion examples.
OBJECTIVES:
- Demonstrate basics skills working with After Effects
- Illustrate basic concepts though graphic style and motion.
- Articulate your design process and thinking in developing visual solutions.
- Provide constructive feedback during critiques.
SET UP CLASS/ASSIGNMENT FOLDERS for your work.
- Create a folder on your USB drive and name it: art460
- Create a folder inside art460 and name it: assignments
- Create a folder and name it: assign1
Save ALL files related to this project inside the assign1 folder.
WHAT TO DO:

CLASS TUESDAY January 16.

HOMEWORK:
- TAKE original VIDEOS + original STILLS collecting footage to be used in class tecnical exercises working with After Effects. Follow the criteria below:
- CHOOSE A SINGLE ACTIVITY OR PROCESS that can be documented and used as the footage for a series of short videoss/motion designs/animations/technical projects in class
- Consider an activity/process that evolves over time, such as: washing and drying laundry, walking to the library, preparing a meal, getting ready to leave or return home. AVOID recording while driving.
- RECORD about TWENTY, 5-6 SECOND VIDEOS of the activity/process; allow time to pass in the activity/process between video recordings.
- TAKE STILL PHOTOS througout the activity/process in which the subject is centered within the frame.
- INCLUDE A RANGE OF SHOTS: long shot, medium shot, close-up shot, etc.
- REMEMBER, CONTRAST!
- READ the following Chapters in your textbook, Design for Motion by Austin Shaw.

- WORK THROUGH the following 5 TUTORIALS to demonstrate you understand the technique demonstrated
for each one.
- keyframe animation tutorial: download samples files and save inside your assign1 folder
- animate shape layers tutorial: download sample files and save
- Convert Illustrator layers into shape layers: download sample files and save
- animated backgrounds tutorial: download sample files and save
- animate an object to follow along a path tutorial: download sample files and save
- SAVE all your version of the 5 tutorials
- Watch this tutorial 1st. Render your compositions with the Render Queue
- Use Adobe Media Encoder to convert the AE composition to an MP4 file.
- select the composition panel --> go to COMPOSITION in the menu --> Select ADD to ADOBE MEDIA ENCODER QUEUE.
- In Media Encoder Click and expand the format tab, then select H.264 form the dropdown menu.
- Click on the green "Play" button to start the rendering.
- DOWNLOAD this HTML Template
- SAVE it inside your assign1 folder as: index.html
- Insert the appropriate .mp4 files and label each one.
- SAVE and UPLOAD to your server account.
- WORK in class on your Narrative Sequence/Technical Experiment(s)
HOMEWORK
- Complete the 5 tutorials, save each one as an .mp4 file and insert into the HTML file.
- Upload to your server account.
- Complete your Narrative Sequence/Technical Experiment(s) made using your footage of a selected activity/process. RENDER + SAVE as .mp4
- copy and paste relevant code in the HTML file to allow for your to insert additional videos
