ASSIGNMENT 2: NARRATIVES in Design (40pts)
DESCRIPTION:
Using a combination of an Adjective and a Noun develop a concept and narrative, style frames, a design board, and an animation, while learning techniques working with After Effects and applying them in ways that support the concept and the narrative.
OBJECTIVES:
- Illustrate your concept using style frames
- Present the style frames within a design board
- Demonstrate your technical skills working with After Effects.
- Demonstrate your ability to apply principles of art and design to your style frames and to animate your concept/narrative.
- Demonstrate your ability to communicate a narrative.
- Apply your understanding of working with multiple modes of communication: image, sound, type, motion.
SET UP CLASS/ASSIGNMENT FOLDERS for your work.
- Create a folder on your USB drive and name it: art460
- Create a folder inside art460 and name it: assignments
- Create a folder and name it: assign2
Save ALL files related to this project inside the assign2 folder.

IN CLASS TUESDAY February 6
- INTRODUCE the Project
BEGIN
- DEVELOP YOUR CONCEPT for a narrative based on a random combination of an adjective and a noun generated here: http://creativityforyou.com/combomaker.html.
- Explore random adjective and noun combinations.
- Select one adjective and noun combination.
- Determine the actions / events that affect the noun (subject)
- consider several short narratives
- Make word lists and mind maps as part of your process.
- this will help you in developing a narrative(s)
- check out Visual Thesaurus by ThinkMap: https://www.visualthesaurus.com
- Identify inspiratios for your ideas narrative(s)
- inspirations for ideas related to the adjective/noun can come from a news clips you heard, a song, science, somethings you observed, etc.
- Select sounds that reflect and or can be used to extend the elements of the narrative.
- Write rough draft of possible narratives
- Sketch (pencil and or marker on paper) a stroyboard that gives a rough idea of the sequence of the narrative; 8 - 12 frames.
- NOTE: Final Narrative Animation (details in PT3) will be short approximately 15 - 20 seconds

- Work in class developing 6-8 STYLE FRAMES
- OPEN Illustrator
- Set up 6 - 8 artboards within one .AI file
- Set artboard size to 16:9 aspect ratio (1920px wide by 1080px high); 16 in by 9 inches; 8in by 4.5 inches; etc)
- Color Mode: RGB
- BE SURE to PLACE ALL ELEMENTS you want to animate on their OWN LAYER;
- Avoid GROUPING ELEMENTS
- Be keenly aware of composition and techniques described in readings and in the video on Visual Storytelling
- Include how you will transition between shots/events
- SAVE your .ai files
- PREPARE to PRESENT all 6-8 style frames within a DESIGN BOARD for CRITIQUE.
- Use InDesign for presenting your style frames.
- Insert the .ai artboard representing each style frame into a rectangle frame.

- SAVE your .indd file.
- Package the .indd file;
- Export your i.indd file as a .jpg file
- Insert the .jpg file in the html file: index.html

- IMPORTANT: the style frames should represent high quality drawings, details, with attention to composition, variety of camera angles and camera distance, indicate the type of transitions and lighting, color, and how you integrate contrast onto the style frames.

- IF you want to move anything it must be on its own layer.
- Begin building ANIMATION in AFTER EFFECTS
- set your composition to 1920px by 1080px
- 24 frames per second
- save your .aep file inside your assign2 folder
- import your assets into the project panel
- make sure all assets are in your assign2 folder
- Make a new composition
- Build your background(s)
- If you have different perspectives you will need to place the drawings into a separate composition
- Begin to build a composition for one of your characters.
